Happy One Year Anniversary of South By Southwest ( SXSW) Experience 2016

Festival season has started and I couldn’t be any more happier! Why, do you ask? I am the festival

GAWD.

No, seriously. I make a list of festivals I want to attend each year and I make that move. Last year, I had the opportunity to attend my first South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. The trick is to sign up to work or volunteer and you get badge access to all of the events. Yes.. FREE! Out of towners have to provide their own flights and accommodations. But, who cares?! It’s a 10 day festival broken up into 3 sections: Music, Film, and Interactive. We participated during the music festival and it was amazing! We worked the outdoor stage and networked with fellow Texans.

BUT.. the highlight of my SXSW experience was meeting Kelly Rowland. I asked my crew leader to change my shift just so I can attend Kelly’s workshop. Once again, if you have a badge then you are guaranteed access. I really do admire Kelly as a strong black woman. She was so humble, personable, and endearing. I even showed her how to operate Snapchat. I take full credit for her getting a Snapchat now!

DO'S & DON'T'S 

 1. Book your housing EARLY and try to find a location near the Austin Convention Center      (Downtown area). It’s more accessible to walk and cost less than taking an UBER/LYFT

2. Sign up to be a volunteer/work the festival

3. Network! You never know who you may meet at events all over Texas.

4. Check the weather and dress appropriately( bring a bookbag, poncho, sneakers, boots)

5. Check out the Torchy’s Taco on 1311 South 1st Street or 1822 South Congress

6. Check out the Graffiti Park at Castle Hill for the amazing view and artwork.

7. Don’t just stick to Sixth Street to hang out. Austin has so many venues to check out to be social. South Congress and Riverside alone has just as many shows and parties going on as downtown does.
