Howard University's Homecoming 2024 - 100 Years on the Yard

Howard University's Homecoming 2024 - 100 Years on the Yard

Have you experienced an HBCU homecoming? I’ve met so many Bisons along the way in my journey through life and then often wondered what it would’ve been like to go to Howard or to another HBCU. Well, this is my POV as a guest!

Last month, I had the opportunity to celebrate Howard University’s 100th homecoming. I know 100 years sounds insane, but to see it in-person was an amazing experience.

The university welcomed back thousands of Bisons to campus to celebrate their personal and institutional legacies created at The Mecca, a moment 100 years in the making. The theme for this year was’ Yard of Fame’, which paid homage to the culture of Black Hollywood while celebrating the global and historic changemakers fortified by their academic journeys at Howard University.

To be honest, I fit right in. LOL I was shocked that I knew so many people that graduated there. It was to the point that I was getting invited to some of their class reunions, which were all a great time. I think the most important lesson I learned that weekend was, life is about celebrating with family and friends. Also, the power of networking can become a full circle moment. This has happened to me a few times.

Before I started my festivities, I had a few meetings at the U.S. Capital that Friday. It’s called giving balance. Work hard, play hard. Of course, we hung out on the ‘Yard’ as they say, to watch a few performances by Leon Mutt, Coco Jones and more. It was geat hanging out on the Yard socializing, taking pictures, and of course watching what everyone wore. Literally, homecoming is a fashion show. So, don’t show up looking nuts! One of my favorite happy hour spots that we went to was King Street Oyster Bar . I love their food and they have a good variety to choose from. Then, we went to The Bullpen which is an outdoor venue in the D.C. area which was over capacity, but still a great time. We went to brunch at The Gatsby and I highly recommend. It’s literally down the street from The Bullpen. We can’t forget about the infamous U Street which is a staple in D.C. for weekend vibes. It was packed and then we headed over to The Mayflower for one of my friend’s class reunion events.

So, yes, Howard’s Homecoming was unforgettable and can’t wait to go again next year!
