Hiking at Harriman State Park
I found a new love for hiking during this time of quarantine. You get a mix of working out and traveling at the same time. I thought it was time to venture out and do something different for a change. I spend a lot of time in the city, but not enough of it upstate. It was time to see what New York had to offer.
Harriman State Park is the second largest state park in New York State. Located in Rockland and Orange counties 30 miles north of New York City, it is a haven for hikers with over 200 miles of hiking trails. The distance between New York and Harriman State Park is 36 miles.
You are advised to wear a mask during your hike if you see people on the trail. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing! Bring a light lunch! I packed a sandwhich, fruit, and water. Don’t forget your bathing suit, bugspray , Blackgirl Sunscreen, and shades! If you are wondering why I mentioned a bathing suit, it is because people swim at the lake when they reach the top of the mountain. There is a lake at the beginning of your hike as well and you are allowed to take a dip.
The best times to visit Harriman State Park are during the summer and fall seasons. While the park is open year-round for winter lovers too, during the summer all trails, campsites and lake areas are open and completely safe to enjoy.
